Standard Practice for Construction of Geogrid for Subgrade Engineering


Construction process:

Construction preparation (material transportation, setting out) → substrate treatment (cleaning) → geogrid laying (laying method, overlap width) → filler (method, particle size) → rolling geogrid → lower geogrid paving.


Construction method:

Foundation treatment

Firstly, the lower layer is leveled and rolled. The flatness is required to be no more than 15 mm, and the compaction meets the design requirements. The surface is strictly prohibited from hard projections such as broken stones and blocks.


Laying of geogrid

a. When storing and laying geogrids, avoid sun exposure and long-term exposure to avoid performance degradation.

b. Laying perpendicular to the direction of the line, the overlap meets the requirements of the design drawings, the connection is firm, the strength of the connection in the direction of the force is not less than the design tensile strength of the material, and the overlap length is not less than 20 cm.

c. The quality of the geogrid meets the requirements of the design drawings.

d. Maintain continuity in construction without distortion, wrinkle, or overlap. Pay attention to tightening the grid to make it stressed, and manually tighten it to make it even, flat, close to the lower bearing surface, and fix it with nails.

e. When the geogrid is used, the direction of the long hole is the same as that of the line cross section, and the geogrid should be straightened and flattened. The ends of the grille are treated as designed.

f. Fill the filler in time after the geogrid is spread, and the interval should not exceed 48 hours to avoid direct exposure to sunlight.


After the grid is laid, it should be filled in time. Filling is carried out symmetrically according to the principle of "two sides first, then middle", and it is strictly forbidden to fill the middle of the embankment first. The filler is not allowed to be unloaded directly on the geogrid, it must be unloaded on the pavement soil surface, and the discharge height is not more than 1m. All vehicles and construction machinery are not allowed to walk directly on the paved geogrid, and are only allowed to drive along the embankment.

Rolling geogrid

After the first layer of fill reaches the predetermined thickness and is compacted to the design density, the grille is rolled back 2m and tied to the geogrid of the upper layer, and the anchor is artificially trimmed, and 1m of soil is cultivated outside the rolling end to protect the grid Fence to prevent man-made damage.


Complete the paving of one layer of geogrid according to the above method, and follow the same steps to pave the other layers of grid. After the grid is laid, the upper embankment will be filled.

Construction Notes:

The direction of maximum strength of the grid shall be consistent with the direction of maximum stress.

Try to avoid heavy vehicles driving directly on the paved geogrid.

Minimize the amount of cutting and stitching of the geogrid to avoid waste.

During the construction in cold season, the geogrid becomes hard and it is easy to cut hands and wipe the knees. Pay attention to safety.
